Members of the St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network (Bethlehem, Pa.) family recently traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador with the group Community Cares for Kids. The St. Luke's team included Christina Carboni, RN, BSN, staff nurse for the medical ICU; Elaine Carboni, CRNA, BSN; Brent Bernstein, DPM; and Karli Richards, DPM. They were accompanied by 30 St. Luke's volunteers to assist with triage, surgeries, and recovery room care.

The week-long medical excursion netted 77 successful surgeries, including cleft lip/palate revision and repair, club foot repair, ear transplant for microtia/atresia congenital ear deformity and burn scar revisions. A periodontist also was present to perform free dental exams and treatments to an additional 100 children.

More than 70 bags of medical supplies were sent to the Naval Hospital in Ecuador. With the support of MICU manager Kim Wolfe, RN, and staff, coloring books, markers, crayons, and toys were presented to each child who had surgery.
