Question:

Dear Donna,

Over the past few months, I have seen advertisements in Nursing Spectrum for “‘Dear Donna,’ well-known career guru.” This is very upsetting to me. As a disciple of a True Guru and out of my deepest reverence and respect for my Guru Shubhranandaswami, I write to you. Using “Guru” in the manner in which people here in the west choose to use it is highly disrespectful to a True Guru and Spiritual Master. I share this with you because your visibility is potentially worldwide, and you only get one chance to make a first impression. I speak from my heart. When one loves the path and Master they follow, all one can do is hold to their highest ideal and protect that which sustains them. God knows nurses need support and camaraderie from each other. The service you provide can be of great value to many. Could the advertising for your column be reviewed?

Alice

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Alice,

Thank you for your feedback. We always appreciate hearing from readers. When using the word “guru” in this context, we are referring to the broader definition of the word as defined by Webster’s College Dictionary: “a leader in a particular field.”

My best wishes,
Donna
