Is the GI lab a good career choice for a new nurse?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I’ve worked as an interventional tech in the GI lab for 18 years. I recently passed boards, and I would like to remain there. Would this be a good career choice for a new nurse, or should I move on?

Ty

Dear Donna replies:

Dear Ty,

If you love what you do, then there is not necessarily a reason to change. On the other hand, now that you are a nurse, you might want to broaden you experience base. It can feel “safe” to stay with what you know, but sometimes true growth requires change.

The important thing to understand is that there is no one, right career path for all nurses. Each nurse has to carve out his or her own career path. I suggest reading my book Your First Year as Nurse <www.nurse.com/CE/7010>. In the end, you must follow your heart and go with your gut. If you stay where you are, be sure to join (if you’re not already a member) and get active in the Society of Gastroenterological Nurses and Associates <http://www.sgna.org>.

Congratulations and welcome to the profession!
Donna
