How do I gain OR skills so I can obtain CNOR certification?

Dear Donna,

I am looking to expand my skills to CNOR specialty. I have 20 plus years of experience, but none of it is in the OR. Can you suggest a training or preceptor program to gain these skills?

Dear Maureen,

Your best source of education and information about anything related to the OR is the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses <http://www.aorn.org>. Contact the officers of your state chapter and ask for local programs and resources. Do an informational interview <http://www.dcardillo.com/articles/thescoop.html> with these folks. You should even get out to local AORN meetings as a guest. When there’s something you want to do, it makes sense to rub elbows with those already doing that thing.
