Is it a HIPAA violation to do the change-of-shift report in the corridor?

Question:

Dear Donna,

I hope you can help me obtain specific information on the HIPAA law. My hospital employer insists on the change-of-shift report being done in the corridor. We have many patients who roam the halls; therefore, they are potentially able to hear the private information of others. Most of the staff objects, but we are having difficulty obtaining concrete information. Please help us protect our patients’ rights!

Patient confidentiality, privacy, and professionalism have always been part of nursing practice. You/we don’t need to fully understand or quote HIPPA regulations to make your case. However, if you wish to learn more, contact your facility quality improvement coordinator and/or risk manager for help with this.
